Meerut is known as the largest manufacturer of musical instruments in India. The Mayasura Kingdom, based in Maharashtra, was the place on which Meerut was based that the city got its name. In its past, this city had gained notoriety and place as it was the starting point of the 1857 rebellion against the East India Company of India. This city is geographically located between the plains of the Yamuna and the Ganges areas.

In 2020, the city got the 242nd position among the main cities and urban areas of the world. The city has been on various reputed lists, one by Morgan Stanley in June 2011 which placed Meerut at the fifth position among the “Vibrancy Index”, 63rd among the world’s fastest-growing cities, 14th among India’s fastest-growing states, 2nd on both the consumption index and the financial penetration index which denotes a higher standard of living and urbanization.

The city’s urban expansion is observed in the coming out of new malls, high-rise buildings, multi-lane roads, flyovers, and big office blocks. Despite the fact that the modernization of industries have resulted in the displacement of traditional manufacturing activities, Meerut City still remains one of the most industrialized cities in western Uttar Pradesh. Generally known for the handloom and scissors industries, today the city has also become the center of textile, chemical, paper, sports goods, sugar, and musical instrument manufacturing industries. ITES and IT spaces are likely to have been included in the city’s long-term economic development plan.
