Long ago, Surat was a harbor for ships. Now it has become a city for textiles as well as diamond cutting. Surat has a varied and interesting history. The British’s most first landing point was at this port. The Dutch and Portuguese had trading posts in Surat also. Remnants of these are present in the city. In its prime, Surat was the home of ships from 84 countries.                                

Now, it is even the most commercial and economic hub of South Gujarat. It has become a substantial variety of clothes and accessories, plus a very strong diamond and textile industry. The latest statistics suggest that maybe 90% of diamonds in the entire world are cut and polished in Surat. It is the ninth city with the maximum population and the eighth city as far as the area under urban agglomeration is concerned in the country.

The city of Surat is not as hot as other similar cities because of the sea and the Gulf of Camboy. The summer usually starts in early March in Surat and it goes on up to June. The average high temperature in the hottest months of the year, April, and May, is around 37 °C. The onset of the monsoon in late June brings a decrease in temperature. By the end of September the scenario is completely different. In winters, from the early part of the November month to the middle of the December month, the weather is typical with typical maximum daily temperatures of around 23 °C and little rainfall.
